About Celia

Adopt feral cats

We urgently need homes for our rescued feral and semi-feral cats on stables, farms and smallholdings
Feral Cats

we have been granted planning permission to build a new cattery at our Lewisham centre

The cost of the new building is £1,000,000 which we are intending to fund in part from legacy income but do also need to fundraise a significant amount. Provided we have sufficient funding the anticipated start date is June 2024 with a 9-12 months construction time. The pace of progress though will be reliant on having sufficient funding at each stage and we need to successfully raise a significant sum of money during financially challenging times.

Please help to support us. Anything you can give will help us on this journey, no matter how big or small.

PALM’S STORY: Found crying for help beside a rubbish bin

Palm was just a tiny stray kitten, around 3 months old, when he was found wedged beside a wheelie bin, crying out in pain and fear. He couldn’t stand properly, his back legs trembling beneath him, but what broke our hearts most was the sound of his cries. This poor kitten was clearly in agony and begging for someone to notice him! 😿(see video in comments section)

The kind people who did notice him called us for help and one of our rescue workers brought him into safety.

Once in our care at our Canning Town Clinic, X-rays revealed the true extent of his injuries: both of Palm’s femoral necks (the tops of his thigh bones) were broken. We don’t know exactly what happened to him, perhaps he fell from a height, or something heavy was dropped on his fragile little body. Imagine the agony he must have been in! One of the breaks had already begun to heal on its own, while the other was so badly damaged the bone had to be removed to provide him with relief from pain.

Palm is now on strict crate rest, receiving pain relief and round-the-clock care. He’s safe, but he’s not out of the woods yet.

We urgently need your help to cover the cost of his surgery, pain management, aftercare, and the chance to find a loving home once he’s healed. Palm has endured more suffering in his short life than most animals ever should, but with your support, we can help to give him a brighter future.

🙏 Please click the button or the link below to donate if you can. Share his story. Help turn Palm’s pain into hope. As always, we thank you for your generosity and dedication to saving the animals.

“We adopted Alfie in April 2022, we had recently bought our first home and knew something was missing, then along came Alfie.

The first day he was dropped off he walked around with confidence and was very vocal. From that day on he continues to make his presence known, loves attention and knows that he is THE King Alfred of the house! He’s a great explorer, also likes us to know he’s home by shouting once he’s in. 😂

Thank you to all of the amazing staff and volunteers who help bring our babies to us!!”

✨ Adoption Update: Big Boy and Baby Girl’s journey has been anything but ordinary. ✨

Big Boy and Baby Girl first came to Celia Hammond as tiny kittens, found their first home together, and lived happily for nearly a decade. But after eight or nine years, their world was turned upside down. Their owner told us their roof had collapsed and asked if we could take the pair back temporarily while they sorted out housing. But sadly… they never returned.

And so, Big Boy and Baby Girl found themselves back at our Canning Town Centre - confused, heartbroken, and deeply nervous. For weeks, they barely left their hiding spot under the stairs inside their pen. Baby Girl, especially, struggled to trust again.

But then along came Genevieve. 💕 And with time, patience, and lots of love, these two blossomed into the most charming little characters.

As Genevieve says:

“Watching Big Boy and Baby Girl grow in confidence over the past year has been so life-affirming and beautiful!

When they first came home, they were still quite unsure, but now they are the most social butterflies ever! If any guests are round, they waste no time making friends and climbing onto strangers’ laps for cuddles.

They are the sweetest and funniest little duo and make everyone laugh constantly with their antics.

We also have a small enclosed garden which they absolutely adore, having spent the first 10 years of their lives as indoor cats. They are little celebs in my community, everyone constantly wants updates on them!

Thank you to the team at Celia Hammond for bringing them into my life and being so lovely and supportive ever since.”

It’s impossible not to smile seeing the photos of how far they’ve come: living their very best lives, making friends, and entertaining everyone they meet. 🐾

Wishing this perfect pair a lifetime of cuddles, sunshine, and community fame. 🌿💛

They don’t come any cuter! Lizzie and Lemon 🍋 are ready to steal your heart (and your sofa).

These 12 week old sisters are full of beans - proper hooligans who love life, each other, and anyone who gives them a cuddle! 💕

Lizzie & Lemon were born outdoors under a garden bar. Rescued by our Lewisham team with their mum and three siblings, they’ve grown into super friendly, purry, playful girls who are now ready to take on the world together.

We’re looking for a loving home for them as a pair, with safe garden access once they’re old enough to explore.

If your home is ready for some kitten chaos and endless cuddles, email us at lewisham@celiahammond.org to start the adoption process.

📍 We’re prioritising local adopters (SE London, Bromley, SW London, N Kent), but if you can offer a home to one of our harder-to-home cats, we may consider further afield.

🐾 Visits are by appointment after a home check, but you’re also welcome to drop in for an initial chat at our Lewisham Rescue Centre, weekends 1-5pm. (And if you bring a donation of cat food, our residents will be very grateful! 🐟)

🌟 Not ready to adopt but still want to help? Your donations help us save more kittens like these. Because, behind every rescue photo, there's someone like you who made it possible. Click the link below⤵️

Happy Adoption ❤️

George (formerly Bagpuss) is around 11 years old and was a former feral cat rescued from a tip. Harrold (formerly Rocco) was an unwanted kitten. When they were paired together at our Greenacres centre, a special bond formed and in October 2024, Debbie and Paul brought them home together.

We received the sweetest update from George and Harold’s guardians...

“George may look like a sleepy old cat, but he’s full of mischief and can move surprisingly fast when he has the zoomies! They both love playing with Colin and exploring their garden. They’ve settled in beautifully alongside their 'brofurs' Jeremy (also from Celia Hammond) and Colin.” ~Debbie and Paul

We absolutely love receiving your happy adoption updates! If you’ve adopted from us, please send us your stories and photos via Messenger using the words “happy adoption”. It makes our day to see our rescue cats thriving in their new homes. 🐾

😻Grace😻

Netflix? Sure.
Cuddles? Always.
Going out? Likely, not.

Some girls love a night out.
Grace? She loves a night in...every night. 🐾💖

Indoor-only, gentle, and ready for a second chance. Grace is the ultimate homebody looking for a forever home 🏡🐱💕

New Arrival to our Lewisham Centre, Grace is a friendly 12 year female cat who has come to us because her owner was moving and couldn't take her with them.

Our vets have diagnosed that Grace has an over active thyroid gland which is common in older cats so she has been started on medication for this. She will also need some dental work which our vets will do once her thyroid levels have been stabilised. Grace can be adopted under our Long Term foster scheme whereby we will continue to provide her veterinary care relating to her thyroid condition. ❤️

Grace has been used to living as an indoor only cat.

To enquire about Grace please email lewisham@celiahammond.org with your contact information.

ADOPTION PROCESS:

Because our cats are rescued we do like to meet potential adopters this can either be at your home (home visit) or via a video call e.g WhatsApp this is an informal visit to provide advice about caring for cats or kittens e.g health care, feeding, settling in and also an opportunity for us to feel reassured that you could provide a good home.

Following a successful home assessment we can make an appointment for you to come and meet our cats.

We are prioritising homes that are local to our centres. Lewisham Branch Homing catchment area: All SE London and BR (Bromley) postcodes. Also N.Kent (Welling, Bexley, Sidcup, Swanley, Dartford), Croydon and SW London (SW8, SW9, SW2, SW11, SW4, SW12, SW16) If you can offer a home to a 'harder to rehome' cat we will consider homes outside our usual rehoming areas.

Our Rescue Centre reception is also open every Saturday and Sunday afternoon between 1p.m and 5p.m for potential adopters to drop in to meet us for an initial chat about adopting one or more of our cats. Our address is 233-235, Lewisham Way SE4 1UY - please bring a donation of cat food to help us feed our rescue cats.

⚠️Trigger warning: severe injury⚠️

How much suffering can one little cat endure?

Stella was living as a stray when a kind man began feeding her. One day, she appeared with an injury so horrific it’s difficult to describe. Her back leg had been severed, with exposed bones protruding from the wound. The break was jagged, the wound bloodied, it’s anybody’s guess what caused it. Our best suspicion is that she may have been caught in some kind of trap meant for another type of animal. Somehow, she survived like this, out in the elements, for a couple of weeks! The pain and trauma she endured is unthinkable.

The man called around, trying desperately to find help, but things are dire across the city. It's no secret that every shelter is full and it’s very difficult to find a private vet that will treat an injured cat when there is nobody to pay the bill.

When we heard her story, we couldn’t turn away and agreed to take her in right away.

Stella was rushed to our Canning Town Clinic, where she was immediately given pain relief, antibiotics and supportive treatment to ease her suffering. Our vets quickly determined that her leg couldn’t be saved and this leg would no longer be of any use to her. She underwent emergency surgery to amputate the limb. Then the vet discovered yet another cruel blow...

Stella was also suffering from a pyometra, a serious infection where the uterus fills with pus. If left untreated it can rupture causing peritonitis. If not treated by emergency surgery this can result in death.

How many bad cards can one little cat be dealt?

With your help, we are determined that Stella's luck is about to change. ✨

Thanks to the expertise of our team, Stella's leg was removed and she was spayed to remove her infected uterus. She is now recovering safely under 24-hour care. She is finally warm, safe, and being treated for her pain, but her road to recovery has only just begun.

Her surgeries, hospitalisation, medications, and ongoing care will come at a significant cost, we simply cannot meet the growing costs of our rescue work without the help of our community and loyal supporters.

🙏 Please, if you can, donate today to help cover Stella’s life-saving surgeries and give her the happy, pain-free future she so deserves.

Every donation, no matter how small, helps us say yes to the next Stella. Please click the link below or the button attached to this post.

❗️Gorgeous George - Priority❗️

George is a very handsome 11 year old male cat who came into the care of our Lewisham Centre in January and keeps getting overlooked.

George has come in to our care from a family who loved him very much but were unable to meet his needs. George had become dirty in their home toileting in the wrong places, this had been happening for 3 years and they had resorted to confining him to the kitchen which was leading to George becoming even more unhappy.

George was taken to their vet but no medical reason for this behaviour could be found. Often when cats become dirty it is a sign that they are unhappy, a protest that something has changed and is upsetting them. The family have three young children and it is thought that George just cannot cope in such a busy family home.

George is seeking a calm, adult home, he would like to be the only cat and needs a home with a garden.

🙏🏼 To enquire about George please email lewisham@celiahammond.org with your contact information.
